Groundhog marmot exterminator

Capture, relocation and preventive work against groundhogs

Groundhog extermination and relocation

Are you looking for an extermination company on the South Shore that captures and relocates groundhogs in the forest? The extermination of marmots is prohibited in our province because the marmot is a protected species. Relocation in the forest is only permitted. To perform this task, you must have an authorization from the Ministry of Wildlife and a C5 license from the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Fight against Climate Change.

Nova Extermination employs effective groundhog capture and relocation techniques to the forest, far from your home. Our specialized technicians use gentle techniques and employ the necessary equipment (capture cages, baits, nets, etc.) to carry out this task.

General information on the marmot

  • Reproduction period: between March and April.
  • Giving birth : marmots give birth between April and May.
  • Gestation: between 28 and 32 days
  • Number of young: the female gives birth to a litter which has between 2 and 6 youngs
  •  Weaning of the young: between the end of June and the beginning of July

In fall, groundhog eats as much as possible in order to have reserves for the 5 to 6 months of hibernation. His heart slows down and goes from 80 beats per minute to 4 or 5 beats per minute; body temperature drops to 7 degrees, and he is barely breathing. It wakes up each month for it’s personal needs.

Marmots live in fields or near forests. They are rather herbivorous but sometimes eat young birds and insects. They can devour gardens and burrow near your house, digging elaborate galleries. Groundhogs can transmit diseases (including rabies) and carry parasites.

Did you know ?

A marmot’s life expectancy is between 4 and 8 years in the will state and up to 10 years in captivity !

How to sustainably get rid of a marmot

If a groundhog has dug a burrow near your house and robbed your garden, it will have to be captured and then relocated to the forest (a groundhog elimination is prohibited). The specialized technicians of Nova Extermination will be able to capture the groundhog that bothers you, and will relocate it safely in the forest, with its babies.

If a groundhog has entered your house or another building, our technicians will find the entry points and can block them with a wire mesh (the groundhog is very flexible and can squeeze through small holes). Our technicians will then give you some advice to prevent other marmots from settling near your home or business.

Get to know groundhogs better

Learning more about groundhogs will help you better understand your problem. Their lifestyle, although not very active, can be disturbing, especially for people who put a lot of effort in their vegetable gardens, since they will be happy to come and nibble and ravage your small organic garden.

Habitat

Groundhogs (marmots) are always happy to visit your garden. Why? While there is plenty of greenery and food everywhere they are found, a backyard is always more appealing. In addition to having greenery, they often find vegetable gardens there! They appreciate their stay with you because, as a rule, she can hide under your shed or your balcony and raise her family there.

Food

Reproduction

The groundhog gives birth to her youngs in May or June. Gestation lasts between 30 to 34 days, for a litter of 3 to 5 young. The groundhog only has one litter per year. Babies, which we call marmots, are born completely blind for 28 days. Subsequently, their bodies cover themselves with short hair, open their eyes, and are weaned. When they are born, they weigh 30g, 8 weeks later, they weigh nearly 600g!
Their diet is all about eating, as quickly as possible, as much as possible, in order to be best prepared for winter.

A groundhog exterminator must understand their way of life to be the most apt to deal with the situation quickly.
