Here is some information that will help you prevent their infestations and how to deal with them:
Ants appeared during the Cretaceous period, they lived with the dinosaurs! According to a study by Harvard and Florida universities, they date back to more than 130 million years ago, so they survived the Tertiary era, the area that eradicated the dinosaurs, as well as the Ice Age.
Methods used for a household ant extermination
To effectively exterminate house ants, you must eliminate the workers but also the queen (or queens when there are several nests in the house). Sometimes the queen is in the mother colony outside, while the satellite nests are in your home. For house ants extermination, baits can be placed on the floors of the house, which the ants will bring to others as well as to the queen. You can also spread an insecticide on the surfaces at risk.
We offer this affordable house ant extermination service in all cities of the South Shore of Montreal. We master techniques to exterminate house ants, and we use insecticides approved by the Ministry of the Environment.
CLOGGING OF ENTRIES
Unlike other exterminators, we don’t just quickly exterminate house ants. If you wish, we will prevent their return by plugging entry points (cracks and holes around windows, doors, baseboards, etc.). We’ll take a tour of your home and inspect all potentially risky places, then patch them up.
Nova Extermination’s ant exterminators have a valid license from the Régie du Bâtiment du Québec (RBQ: 5734-75930-01) as well as from the Committee on Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work. (CNESST) to carry out the necessary sealing work. We are also protected by full liability insurance to perform this work.
House ants can be of different types. Carpenter ants, pavement ants and pharaoh ants are the most common to invade homes:
black or brownish in color, they are between 6 mm and 1 inch long, and their body is divided into three parts. A colony can consist of more than 2000 ants after 3 years. The main nest is usually outside while satellite nests are found inside houses. This insect eats away the wood of the supporting structure of houses. If those ants are in your house in winter, it is sure that they have built a nest or even several nests there; in winter, carpenter ants that are outside go into diapause, a big sleep whith almost no state of activity.
They measure between 1.5 to 2.5 mm in length and are pale yellow or brown in color. The queens have wings and are 3.5 to 5 mm long. Males are around 2.8mm tall and also have wings. A colony can have more than 300,000 ants and several queens. Each satellite nest also includes several laying queens. In winter, house ants survive only inside heated buildings.
They are a reddish black color and measure between 2.5 and 3 mm. They have furrows on the head and on the front of the body. They are most often found outdoors, between cracks in sidewalks and cracks in asphalt, or in rockery. Pharaoh ants reject fine sand when digging their nests. On the diet side, pavement ants like sweet or fatty foods, which is why they invade homes. The queen produces up to 20 eggs per day and a colony can grow up to 5,000 ants.
